 最近我一直在研究Windows 7是如何工作的。早在2007年時(shí)，我曾在一臺(tái)老爺機(jī)上裝上了Windows Vista Home Basic，發(fā)現(xiàn)居然可以流暢運(yùn)行，后來(lái)我也沒(méi)試Ultimate版本。而這會(huì)我手頭上沒(méi)當(dāng)時(shí)的測(cè)試機(jī)器，因此也就不去重復(fù)測(cè)試Windows 7了。

但早些時(shí)候，為了看看從XP向Windows 7升級(jí)的過(guò)程，我在一臺(tái)裝有XP SP3的虛擬機(jī)上進(jìn)行了測(cè)試。進(jìn)行了一些簡(jiǎn)單的記錄后，我就跑去干別的事了。而等我回來(lái)后，令我吃驚的是，Windows 7在這臺(tái)只有512MB內(nèi)存的機(jī)器上運(yùn)行相當(dāng)流暢，無(wú)論是在安裝過(guò)程中還是實(shí)際操作時(shí)都沒(méi)有任何的遲滯感。而更出乎我意料之外的是我裝的居然是64位版本。不過(guò)，就在我打開(kāi)任務(wù)欄管理器查看資源時(shí)，最令人吃驚的那一刻來(lái)臨了。

Windows 7 Ultimate 64位只需要200MB內(nèi)存？真令人難以置信，隨后我發(fā)現(xiàn)所需的硬盤空間也只有9GB。此后，為了形成對(duì)比，我又對(duì)XP和Vista進(jìn)行了測(cè)試，下面是測(cè)試結(jié)果（運(yùn)行至少一小時(shí)后）：

正如你所見(jiàn)，Windows 7在內(nèi)存占用上比Vista要少的多，當(dāng)然磁盤占用也要少些。那么磁盤空間到底少在哪呢？據(jù)我所知，Vista下主要是卷影復(fù)制功能占了較大空間，我這占了有4，6G之多，而在Windows 7中，只有400MB。

I’ve been spending most of my time lately conducting in-depth research into how Windows 7 works, in preparation for my next book. In the process, I’m discovering stuff that simply doesn’t become apparent to a casual tester.

Case in point: Back in 2007, I looked at Windows Vista Home Basic and determined that it could run well on an older machine with limited resources, including 512MB of RAM. I never tried it with Vista Ultimate, nor would I have bothered. And since I don’t have that 2002-vintage test machine set up, I haven’t repeated those tests with Windows 7.
